Creating quizzes with AI: a quality checklist
AI can draft a quiz in seconds. These checks turn a quick draft into questions you're proud to publish.
On this page
AI question generators save hours, but they don't know your students. Treat every generated quiz as a first draft.
Write a precise prompt
Name the topic, level, number of questions, question types and the learning goals. "Ten intermediate questions on photosynthesis for 15-year-olds, mostly application" gives far better results than "photosynthesis quiz".
Check every fact
Read each question and its correct answer. AI can be confidently wrong, especially on numbers, dates and recent changes.
Tune the difficulty
- Remove questions that give the answer away.
- Rewrite weak distractors.
- Add one or two harder questions at the end.
Add your voice
Add explanations in your own words. They're what students remember, and they make your quiz different from everyone else's.
Frequently asked questions
Can I publish AI-generated questions without editing?
You can, but you shouldn't. A quick review catches errors and makes the quiz fit your students.
What makes a good AI prompt for quizzes?
Topic, audience, level, question count, question types and what students should be able to do afterwards.
Can AI write explanations too?
Yes, and it's a good starting point. Edit them so they sound like you and match how you teach.
